Debbie's List of No-No's

Anybody who spends time surfing the Internet can attest to things designers do that make you want to scream.

Jolly Spider is no different. And since we're in this Web design business, we believe we're qualified to point out 10 of those annoying No-No's.

1. Pop-up Ads. Probably the number-one annoyance. That's why so many pop-up/pop-under ad eliminators exist right now. Get one if you don't have such help. May we suggest STOPzilla?

2. Poor navigation. It's supposed to be fairly painless to work your way around a Web site. With some pages, though, you'd never guess that. Do you hit the Back button or close the window? Guess wrong, and you could wind up looking at your desktop!

3. Awful color schemes. Design isn't just about color, I know, but color shouldn't overrule your message either. By that, I mean using sickly shades of lime-green or eye-hurting red text on blue backgrounds. Basic black text on a white page still is the most readable option.

4. Blinking animations. Weren't they cute when they first came out? Now, they're pretty much regulated to beginner's pages because they've been found to detract, not attract, attention.

5. Slow-loading pages. Yes, I know you want your entire portfolio on-line, but studies show most people aren't willing to wait ten minutes for it to load. Be kind to your visitors -- offer thumbnails, with the option to view larger shots.

6. Background music. Many people surf in offices with their volume off; others prefer to choose their own tunes. Enough said.

7. Busy backgrounds. While textures can add interest, be careful they don't obscure your message.

8. Faulty grammar, spellings, and punctuation. Still a no-brainer. If you don't know, look it up. Don't perpetuate ignorance.

9. Lack of contact information. You know who you are, but can your visitors and prospective buyers find you? Be sure you include your phone number, mailing address, and e-mail address. How can you expect people to know you're running a legitimate business if you hide in anonymity?

10. Failure to update regularly. You had your site created in 1999 and it looks great. You paid a bundle for it, too. But are you telling us nothing has changed in all those years??
